Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has blamed President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies for the death of his mother, Dame Mary Amaechi.
Amaechi made the allegation on Friday during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.
The former governor was responding to a question on whether the Tinubu administration’s policies contributed to the death of his mother, who died in July 2026 at the age of 89.
“Is it Tinubu’s policy that killed your mother?” the anchor asked.

Amaechi responded: “Of course, before Tinubu, my mother was healthy.”
The exchange came during a discussion on the country’s economic situation and the impact of rising costs on Nigerians.
When pressed on his responsibility to cater for his mother’s welfare despite his status as a former governor and minister, Amaechi said he was already supporting several people financially.
“Do I have a choice? Do you know how many people I’m taking care of?” he said.
Amaechi’s comments come amid national debate over the effects of the Federal Government’s economic reforms, including the removal of the petrol subsidy and changes to the foreign exchange regime.
His mother, Mary Amaechi, died in July at the age of 89 and was buried on September 5, 2026, in Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Amaechi, who served as Rivers State governor and later as minister of transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari, is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
